Spainish dairy farmers protesting

Since last Thursday, dairy sector in Spain is on movement, in order to protest and asking for a change in the milk prices situation. Last Thursday PROLEC’s milk producers were in a demonstration in Cantabria, against to the actual politics, milk prices decreased around 39% from January 2008 to May 2009, however the cost are around 0,377 euros/litre, which is a very risked situation for Spanish producers. A flexible regulated market and a cost covering milk prices are some of their claims.

Still on the north of Spain, Lugo and Santiago, cities from Galicia were protagonist at the “white week”, where different demonstrations show the disagreement in milk producers concerns to the low milk prices, tractors and blockades in front of supermarkets are some the actions that they did . Unions, independent organizations of milk producers and the whole dairy sector are against the actual situation and claims for a politic change. PROLEC will do a meeting and a press conference with different milk producers’ organizations and unions, next 21rst of July to show a manifest where Administration will find some possible solutions for the decreases of milk prices. That manifest will be sending out to the Spanish agricultural minister.
