Country report – 25-09-2009
Yesterday dairy farmers of most striking countries announced by the EMB the break just one part of the farmers rebellion – the milk strike. The protests and actions are still going on and the dairy farmers are very aware about the 5th of October when the european agricultural ministers have their informal meeting. „We are very aware that there will be a second stage if they do not take over our EMB proposals“, is Wilem Smeenk saying, Member of OPL in France.
France:Yesterday the agricultural minister announced that he wants to support the EMB proposals BUT also contract agriculture and intervention. In the northwestern part of France there was a party conference of UMP (Sarkozy) and the farmers brought out 30.000 liter milk.
Belgium:Today there will be an action concerning a processor of butter who is importing milk powder from New Zealand. Cereal farmers are supporting the actions and burn up cereal.
Italy: Yesterday the action was very successfull – see also the country report 24.09. Today actions in different towns.
Germany: Farmers are aware that the rebellion has not finished. Yesterday chencellor Merkel announced a meeting with Romuald Schaber and Gerd Sonnleitner (National farmer organisation). This will probably escorted by the farmers.
Netherlands: Today farmers are giving milk away to school children. Parents will be informed. The action will be broadcasted in (children)TV.
Luxembourg: Yesterday the action with alliances have been very successfull. Besides many farmers there have been 20 companies from the agricultural sector.
Switzerland: German Switzerland: particular the strike is broken up. Farmers are continuing to mobilise. At the begining of October they expact the proposal of the sectoral organisations. From today on and the whole next week all farmers wants to send every day one liter of milk to the federal office of agriculture – because they decided the extending of the milk quota. French Switzerland: particular strike is going on. Today they are blockading the dairy company Cremo.
Austria: Yesterday the action was very successfull – see also the country report 24.09. Today in Salzburg they give away milk for free to consumers.
