08.03.2010-(lid)- One of the Human Rights is the „right to food “as Oliviér De Shutter, appropriate special correspondant of the United Nations, pointed out in Geneve on March the 8. De Shutter comments on his report  that he had already presented to the UNO Human Rights Council in the last weeks.

According to that, De Shutter states that it is absolutely necessary to protect smaller farmers from discrimination of huge agricultural concerns.

Countries with poorer population are forced to regulate „price structures“ of these big concerns, so that minor farmers are also able to profit of their work and live off what they produce.

The UNO Specialist said to the press agency SDA, that smaller farmers are only able to find a bounded number of consumers for their products. Within the „battle of fair prices“ with big concerns, these circumstances are responsible for the fact that all the smaller ones are not able to achieve appropriate prices for their harvest.

„The situation clearly illustrates why minor estate owners in developing countries belong to the populations that are the most starving ones on earth“, it is said in De Shutters´s report. Fair prices could change this!
