Sarkozy demands commission to spark the fire

POLIGNY (Jura), 27 oct 2009 (AFP) - Nicolas Sarkozy asks the European Commission to speed their work for a new regulation of the dairy sector. The Comission has already reacted on the demands of France and Germany and set up a High Level Group to work out measures for the reorganisation of the dairy sector.

Meetings will take part each month. In june 2010 the final report will be presented. Such a delay is unacceptable. Sarkozy requires a quicker work of the European Commission concerning the issue.

For the next meeting of the European Council the 30th of October he demands  an accentuation of measures to regulate the dairy sector. At a meeting next Wednesday with Angela Merkel, he will discuss this.

Sarkozy takes action to support agriculture

Sarkozy has assured subsidies to the french agriculture in the amount of 1,65 bn Euros. Thereof 650 m Euros are coming from the state itself, 1 bn Euros will be given as a form of credit from the banking sector. Farmers would be able to invest with an interest rate of 1,5% respectively 1% for young farmers; which signifies very good conditions for them.

French agriculture must not be dropped, politics would have to remotivate farmers to invest for their future.

APLI comments measurements of Sarkozy

Due to the disastrous situaton of dairy farmers, the french president has taken action. But the plan of these subsidies is, against the appearance, still to weak. The survival of farms can only be achiecved by an increase of milkprices. And this increase has to happen very quick.

But he has also announced that one has to act before the end of this year . This proofs that politics became at least aware of the problem.

It has also to be mentioned, that the president has called on the High Level Group to present their results before June 2010.

Furthermore president Sarkozy's measurements to help the agricultural sector support those of the french Agricultural Minister. He mentions a regulation, production costs and all other arguments defended by APLI and EMB.

He has also tried to convince other countries of ultra-liberalism as the worst solution for agriculture at all. All this is in the mind of EMB and APLI.

But he has also mentioned that contracts concluded between producers and industry are the only alterntive for a low volatility of prices and a high transparency. It is uncertain, if this can be realised by such measures.

Nevertheless he pointed out that there should be less numerous but therefor stronger organisations of producers which should be capable to face processors and trade.
